What HANA Cloud Platform is offering today

Written by Hardik Patel, Solution Architect at SAP Labs.

As a developer and user of Amazon Web Services since 2010, I have had very good experiences using AWS and SAP HANA. SAP HANA developer edition on AWS has been available since 2011 and I believe it to be one of the best ways to get your HANA system up and running in few minutes. The limitations to using this approach has to do with the size of the HANA system and that you can not get access to SAP HANA Cloud portal, Mobile services, HCI OData provisioning, Cloud connector and many more. While Amazon Web Services is a viable development option, it is limited in scope. The only other way to get access to all of the above services is to use SAP HANA Cloud platform. You not only get access to these services but you can also create applications in HTML5 and in JAVA.

Since early 2014, HANA Cloud Platform has been SAP’s in-memory Platform-as-a-Service, enabling customers and developers to build, extend, and run applications on SAP HANA in the cloud. With flexible subscription models and optional services for apps, database, and infrastructure, it provides instant access to the full power of SAP HANA.

First things first: Developers can launch the free version of developer shared instance in 10 minutes and can create native applications on HANA. This shared instance has only 1GB memory to store data. For larger instance, HCP is offering starter edition, which start at $539/ month for 32GB memory and developers can use this instance for test and development purpose. SAP HANA Cloud Platform has mainly 3 offerings.

  1. SAP Infrastructure Service
  2. SAP HANA DB Services
  3. SAP HANA AppServices

SAP HANA Infrastructure service enables customers to quickly deploy and manage their pre-licensed SAP HANA instance without hardware investment. Customers can get configuration ranging from 128GB to 1TB. SAP’s infrastructure subscription is a scalable, affordable way to deploy SAP HANA license in the cloud. Also included is the SAP Data Services component of SAP HANA Cloud Integration, providing seamless integration with SAP back-ends and heterogeneous sources.

SAP HANA DB service is an easy and low cost way to be up and running with a fully supported SAP HANA system with monthly license and infrastructure subscriptions. Customers can get configuration ranging from 128GB to 1TB.

SAP HANA AppServices is ideal for the creation of innovative, consumer grade applications, and for the extension of cloud and on premise applications. It is packed with features that enable the real-time, secure applications required to succeed in today’s always-on, mobile, social and data driven world. It includes support for integration, analytics, mobile, portals and collaboration, and is available by purchasing license and infrastructure subscriptions. SAP HANA AppServices builds on the capabilities of SAP HANA DB Services.
